Anyone can learn to quilt, but it’s smart to choose a pattern suited to your skill level. Beginners sometimes get a little too ambitious when starting out... That’s why we wanted to show you a few quilt patterns that are perfect for beginners.
Once you learn basic piecing, half-square triangles, and sashing, you can move on to more complicated quilting techniques, such as paper-piecing, curves, and appliqué.
Game Day Quilt Pattern
The Game Day Quilt Pattern is just one step up from a basic patchwork quilt. It involves piecing both squares and half-square triangles in an unfussy grid design. The pattern is perfect for beginners who are ready to master half-square triangles. It can be made with fat quarters, 10” squares, 5” squares, or any scraps you have laying around. The pattern includes two size options, but it’s easily adaptable to any size because of the simple design. You can also choose to use only a couple of colors or show off dozens of your favorite fabrics. Play around — it’s Game Day!
Hidden Lattice Quilt Pattern
The Hidden Lattice Quilt Pattern is another great design for beginners to tackle. It helps you practice the art of lining up points when sewing strips together. The pattern is ideal for rolls of 2-½” strips because it reduces the amount of cutting you need to do. Even though the pattern is simple, it makes a BIG impact because the repeating squares create a “Hidden” design that is reminiscent of those cute lattice fences.
About Town Quilt Pattern
The About Town Quilt Pattern is one of those designs that comes together so quickly. It’s perfect for beginners because of the simple piecing. This pattern is similar to a rail fence quilt, but with added squares to break up the design. It’s a good opportunity to play with fabrics and use a mix of bold and neutral colors. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect design to use up your strips, the About Town quilt pattern is a great option.
Vintage Lane Quilt Pattern
The Vintage Lane Quilt Pattern is ideal for fat quarters. It’s set up to showcase fun fabrics in a windowpane-like design. The pattern looks more complicated than it is because of the two-layer sashing effect. It’s a great pattern to build beginners' confidence in quilting.
Geometry Quilt Pattern
The Geometry Quilt Pattern is another quick sew that is perfect for beginners. This one builds upon the basic patchwork quilt with a mix in of smaller squares and rectangles. The pattern includes sizes from throw to queen and is ideal for 10” square packs.
When you’re new to quilting, it’s a good idea to use a pattern. Beyond detailed instructions and layout diagrams, quilt patterns also tell you how much fabric to buy.
